It seems the message of romantic comedies is that women desperately want their true love to come along and liberate them from their hum-drum jobs and responsibilities. Never mind that each of the women mentioned above appeared to really enjoy their jobs. In order to fulfill the romantic ideal outlined by these films, women should be ready at a moment's notice to walk away from the careers they have built.

The defense of romantic comedies that I hear most often is that they are just a little escapism and I'm not going to claim that there is anything harmful in these films. I do, however, find it interesting the women choose to escape by watching this type of story, where the heroine willfully hands back the dignity and independence we've only recently won for the sake of a man. It seems like a pretty strong indictment of the whole feminist movement. All things considered, I think I'd rather escape by watching a hockey game. (Are you reading this, Gary Bettman?!)
